About me…

Photo.Desiderio-1

I was born in Medellin, Colombia. I am Bioengineer and have a Master Degree in Rehabilitation Sciences. I have enjoyed the opportunities to work in several interdisciplinary groups in Brazil, Canada and, currently, Israel. My dream is to see Colombia and South America strongly interested and dedicated to support research and innovation projects.

Why I joined PACE…

I was seeking an opportunity to perform a doctoral research and join an international research group. I also believe that joint efforts from universities, governments and private and clinical organizations are the best way to make things successfully work in research and innovation. PACE offered me an ideal position!

My Project…

Virtual reality (VR) was initially oriented for amusement and entertainment. However, VR has recently emerged as an efficient tool for rehabilitation of neurological patients. To date, very little is known about the basic mechanisms involved in the use of VR, and there is not standardization for its clinical implementation. My project aims to investigate how perception and action work in VR, and to provide recommendations on the use of VR for rehabilitation programs.

Secondment…

I plan to conduct my secondment with Dr Petra Siemonsma, at TNO in Leiden, The Netherlands, from 23rd February to 4th March 2017. This project aims to provide guidelines on the clinical use of VR for rehabilitation programs. Dr Petra has vast experience on clinical research, and promotes community-engagement and self-efficacy in vulnerable populations.
